The Beauty of Travel

From ancient rituals to therapies based on native plants, our spas offer truly genuine, local experiences. Why not spoil yourself—or give a friend a gift card for a special treatment.

Ancient rituals

In ancient Mayan culture the temazcal—a Mexican sauna—was a ritual to purify body mind and spirit. The experience is faithfully recreated at Belmond Maroma Resort & Spa in a tropical, beachside setting. Guests of the hotel's Kinan Spa relax among hot volcanic rocks, before applying aromatic mud and then taking a cooling dip in the sea beneath the stars. Rich, earthy muds also feature in signature massages and sensual treatments.

Mekong Spa at Belmond La Résidece Phou Vao

Guests are made to feel like royalty at Belmond La Résidence Phou Vao's Mekong Spa in Luang Prabang, where traditional Laotian remedies are at the fore. The sublime Sip Sen Lao massage was once reserved exclusively for the royal family and was dispensed by Buddhist monks; now everyone can enjoy its relaxing, rebalancing effects. The ancient healing art of Hmong shamans features in the Mo Hom massage, in which an indigo herbal compress is used to work its circulation-boosting magic.

Local fragrances

Librisa Spa at Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel in Cape Town aims to help hold back the years with the heavenly African Goddess Facial, which harnesses the anti-ageing properties of rooibos extract, marula oil and rose otto to give the complexion a youthful, luminous glow. The spa champions leading South African skincare brand Africology, whose products are based on regenerative indigenous plants such as African potato and aloe ferox.

At California's Belmond El Encanto in Santa Barbara, treatments are based on local, organic ingredients, sometimes from the hotel's own garden (the seasonal Soothing Sage Body Treatment, for example, offers a body scrub, massage oil and scalp therapy infused with the herb). Male guests warm to the Gentlemen's Hot Towel treatment, which not only deep-cleanses the complexion, but also rejuvenates the skin.

Belmond Spas

At Belmond Hotel Rio Sagrado's Spa Mayu Wilka, soothing treatments echo the spirit of the Urubamba River, whose tumbling waters can be glimpsed through the large windows of the beautiful wood and stone complex in Peru's Sacred Valley. In a range of invigorating body scrub treatments, salt from the nearby Maras pans is infused with other Andean and Amazonian ingredients including sacha inchi, while coca leaves are used in fabulous wraps.

Sample the bounties of the Balearics at Belmond La Residencia, where signature treatments such as Olive Activator, Citrus Siesta and Almond Delight Facial give this Mallorcan retreat an authentic local twist. Similarly, at Belmond Grand Hotel Timeo, Sicilian Sensations imbues guests with a sense of place with its exfoliating volcanic lava treatment (from nearby Mount Etna) and a full-body massage using local fragrances such as orange flower.

In Myanmar, guests can indulge in a treatment while drifting dreamily along the river aboard Belmond's twin river cruisers. The Vital Energy Massage, designed to ignite health and restore vitality, uses poultices of Himalayan herbs, recalling Belmond Orcaella's cruise to the foothills of the Himalayas high up on the Chindwin River. This fragrantly invigorating body massage is also available on sister ship Belmond Road to Mandalay.
