The world’s biggest party arrives in Rio de Janeiro this February. As the city lights up with famous faces, the stars shine brightest at Belmond Copacabana Palace.
With festivities dating back to 1723, Rio Carnival has become the largest in the world. Visitors flock in from around the world, and some 2 million people take to the city streets during each day of the celebrations.
Scheduled annually to precede Lent, Carnival is an explosion of colour and music that runs over six days. The most iconic part of the celebration is the parade, where floats and entertainers from Rio’s numerous Samba schools put on a show-stopping performance in the Sambadrome. Locals and visitors alike party at individual street festivals, while blocos and bandos, mobile musicians and bands, set the tempo of atmosphere and keep the revellers moving.
The most extravagant celebration, however, occurs at Belmond Copacabana Palace and the golden beachfront for which it is famed. Its legendary Magic Ball attracts the most luminary names from around the world.
This year’s extravaganza is produced by theme designer Mario Borrielo, famous for creating exuberant carnival parades at the city’s Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí. The theme for the 2016 ball will be Olympian, in homage to the upcoming Rio 2016 Olympics. Revellers will be taken on a journey through ancient Greece and Olympia, where the spectacle began.
